Hessel is a historic Upper Peninsula town located in the northern part of Lake Huron, featuring an enticing waterfront view and access to the Les Cheneaux Islands. The history of this area started with the Ojibwa Indians and their ancestors, who settled in the area thousands of years ago, giving way to French fur traders and explorers in the 1600s. The creation of this community dates back to the mid-1800s when Scandinavian, Irish and Italian immigrants first settled in the area to log and fish. Today, this small town reflects the area’s rich maritime history through its historic waterfront business districts, wooden Chris-Craft boats moored in its harbor and the unique rock-crib docks, boathouses, and summer homes that line the shore. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy various boating, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking adventures throughout the island area which keeps the waters somewhat protected and provides plenty of inlets to check out. This small town provides a little bit of entertainment for all as it is surrounded by numerous restaurants, museums, unique shops, and photo opportunities.
